Selling my beautiful Matte Dial Rolex Submariner ref # 16800 from 1982. ( Transitional Sub or Pumpkin Dial is another name )
Provenance from the Ottawa area. Former Dive shop owner and RCAF Pilot ( will be shared )
The ref 16800 was introduced in 1979 taking over from the previous 1680. This transitional Sub was available for about 10 years before the more common ref # 16610 arrived in 1989. This has a serial number 7.2 million. The 16800 is a mix of vintage and modern. Upgrades from the 1680 included a new movement ref # 3035 running a more modern 28,000 BPH. The 16800 is the first Sub with a sapphire crystal and a quickset date feature. The first 4 years came with a more rare Matte Dial before switching to the common modern glossy dial and gold surround indices. This dial is original and has some lume remaining. The hands are original but the minute hand had lost the lume and its was repaired. The bezel is original and has faded a nice color. The bracelet is original (ref # 93150) with original # 593 end links. The set comes with everything but papers.
I sourced another bracelet, period correct, 93150 that had less stretch and can be negotiated in the sale.
As far as Sub history goes this is a very rare ref # and we now know that as only 81K were ever made and half of those had the Matte Dial ( aprox ) That is les than the 1680 and 5513 references !
asking a fair $11,000 for a Collectable Submariner and trades considered. Insured shipping at buyer's expense.
The original bracelet has 11 links 2 removable. The second bracelet I bought has 11 links also with 3 removable.
