ITEM CONDITION: Good Item does show some signs of wear and use. This watch being an early PVD model is very hard to find in near mint condition as the PVD coated watches from the early 1980’s are all really well worn off. The PVD process makes it easy for the watches to scratch ans the PVD peels off. This watch is all original…. The overall condition is good but there are some marks that are definitely shown well in the pictures below. This is a rare watch in the regular black PVD finish, and an unbelievably rare watch in the olive green PVD finish.
CASE SIZE: 39mm and 13mm thick
CASE MATERIAL: Olive green treated Aluminum
STRAP SIZE: 18mm
STRAP MATERIAL: Olive green PVD aluminum
WHAT'S INCLUDED: Watch only with extra link to fit a 7” plus or minus a touch wrist
OTHER COMMENTS: If you are a fan of Porsche 911s, you may have heard of the name Ferdinand Alexander Porsche. He designed the legendary model and introduced it to the public in 1963. Under his creative vision, he started a new company called Porsche Design in 1972. Just like his car designs, he preferred a clean Germanic design with a little bit of distinctive flare. He started producing watches with Orfina, a Swiss watchmaker, and released a black PVD watch that was quite revolutionary at the time.
Fast-forward to 1978. Porsche Design collaborated with IWC to create a unique watch design with a compass and an emergency beacon mirror fitted inside the case. The case and the bracelet were made from a special hardened aluminum alloy with a PVD coating added on top. Most examples were issued in black PVD, but a small quantity of them were produced in a matte "NATO Olive" colour as seen here. This model was designed with a hinged case that allows the top portion to flip open by pressing the buttons on the side of the lugs. Inside, it reveals a compass and an emergency beacon mirror. In addition, all magnetic components were replaced with non-magnetic components to prevent any interference with the accuracy of the compass.
As with the black PVD version, the finish is susceptible to wear, especially from friction.
