VINTAGE 1930s ROLEX PRINCE OBSERVATORY DOCTOR'S WATCH WITH SILVER DIAL

This is an authentic Canadian market vintage 1930s Rolex Prince Observatory, in a 10K gold filled case. It is triple signed Rolex on dial, movement and case back. It is 42 or 43 mm long from lug tip to lug tip, and the case is slightly curved. The original un-touched silver doctor's dial says ROLEX PRINCE and below the subsidiary seconds can be made out with a loupe the shadow of the formerly legible word OBSERVATORY. The movement is the highlight. It is a Rolex Prima movement, 17J, adjusted, made by Aegler for Gruen Alpina and Rolex doctor's watches. This particular one has the fern leaf pattern engraved. Rolex did this either at their own factory or Aegler did it before shipping to Rolex. This was done for special order watches to be cased in gold filled cases and sold in Canada. The Gruen name was simply crossed out with the fern leaf motif, and the name ROLEX PRIMA engraved in the largest gear over the barrel. This phenomenon of recycling movements intended initially for Gruen was most likely done to save money. Since these movements were going into gold filled cases rather than solid gold, platinum or silver, it makes sense that papa Wilsdorf would want to save a few bucks on the expense. That was his style. This particular one is not missing any parts, and sparkles quite brilliantly, meaning that it has been well looked after even though the case has seen better days. Winds, sets, runs perfectly, and keeps good time. Ready to wear.
