Selling my 1978 Rolex GMT Master which was acquired in August 2018 from another CWC membership who has become a great resource to me for everything vintage since we transacted. Love this piece but clearing out space for a grail. Somethings got to go and sadly she did not make the cut.
Rather than reinventing the wheel, I have cut and pasted the previous posts description as it is exactly as described. I have babied it since day one and can attest that it’s keeping excellent time...she’s in better health than her 40 year old owner!
Here’s the description from the previous posting, which I have used with his permission. His Dropbox link with high res photos are still up and accurately represents its condition as of today. I am also including a custom brown leather strap which I purchased when I acquired it:
I purchased this piece directly from the original owner, a retired RCMP officer and Canadian Army dive master who was in the market to upgrade to an Apple Watch. Along with the watch came a Rolex Service pouch, cleaning cloth and some limited RSC service paperwork, unfortunately no boxes survived her 40 year journey.
The first owner purchased the watch in the early 80's from an AD in Winnipeg and she stayed there for many years; then through his travels she made her way out east to New Brunswick. This watch is a full Canadian girl and I'd like to keep her in country if possible.
This watch is NOT all original as the first owner had the bezel insert and bracelet changed through RSC ( as noted in the service papers ) but the dial, hands and case ARE all original. His reasons for having the insert and bracelet changed was simply because of wear, they were replaced with a solid brown insert and a SS 62510H Jubilee with 555B endlinks, included and with very little stretch. This piece was his daily wearer and she went for regular RSC service, that said, the case has been polished in the past but still looks great which makes this a great watch for the person who isn't afraid to WEAR their watches. She has some small fleabites and minor dings, swirls and swoops as can be expected from a watch of her age but again just adds to her charm and story, ready for the next chapter of her life. Other cosmetic conditions to note, the solid brown bezel insert has a small chip between 11 and 12, and there is a small chip to the corner of the acrylic crystal at 19. Lume is all intact except for a small crack in the GMT hand, no luminous material is missing but don't hold your breath for the glow, after 40 years she's useless in the dark.
Movement is clean and runs well, I have not had it serviced but did have it looked at by my watch man and he ensured me there was no cause for concern. She keeps great time and date snaps over perfectly at 12. I can have the watch serviced before shipping, at the cost to the new buyer if they so choose. I can also have the crystal replaced before shipping if the new owner would like, at their expense as well.
