The 16550 is quite a rare find today. Made from 1984 to 1988 only, it succeeded the orange hand Steve McQueen 1655 bringing a sapphire crystal and gloss dial to the reference line. The 16570, which followed, was made for decades after and is much more prevalent.
This one is even more scarce. The cream dial escalated in value quickly, leaving an opportunity for collectors to snap up the seldom seen black dial variant. Incredibly undervalued, this is THE last transitional model that hasn't popped in price yet. Within the next couple of years, asking prices will be double this.
I purchase this watch from the son of the original owner. It was purchased at Birks in Ottawa. I have their original invoice. Also included is the original moon crater boxset with the price tag intact! The calendar sits untouched from 1987 in the Rolex green wallet. Punched papers from Birks are included. The watch is pristine! Easily 95%. Case edges super sharp. Working perfectly. Dial and hands replaced at Rolex service as the original 'spidered'. Bezel is fat font and original. A complete set like this makes this an investment grade piece.
Asking $6950. The last of the affordable vintage....but not for long!
