Rolex Explorer II Black Rail Spider Dial.... Reference 16550
Here is a fine example of the now very rare Explorer II with the black dial. The Cream color dial is well documented as a rare Rolex and this model has always been pushed aside. The Black dial version of this watch is more than likely rarer than the cream dial as this was only the second Rolex watch with the option of another dial color. The black dials in this very short run were a problem for rolex as the finishing was cracking on the dial. When customers brought their watches into Rolex for service, they suggested a new dial. This makes the remaining dials even more rare than the cream dial version...
Most of these watches offered are "86" serial numbers making this "84" the first year of production and much rarer again. I have painted the last 2 numbers in the photo but they are as crisp as the numbers you see in the picture.
The Reference 16550 is one of the Rolex watch companies shortest runs of any production watch. It was a transitional watch between the Steve McQueen Orange hand Rolex Explorer II and the current version we see now...
The condition of this watch is as follows.... The watch mechanically runs great. I have had the watch serviced. The case has its fair share of small nicks and scratches but is in very good to excellent shape. The bezel is nicked in a few spots but is all there. The crystal is super clean. The Spider dial is what this watch is all about.... The spider effect on this dial is great. Very hard to photograph as I am not professional at that but the photos are pretty good. The dial is still strong and is in the best condition it could be in. Please excuse the dust on a few of the photos!
What you see in these pictures is what you will receive.
The watch DOES NOT come with box and papers.....
I am making this very rare watch available for $5,300 plus insured shipping or $5,800 in quality trade. I am always willing to trade up!
