IWC Schaffhausen Ref. 170 – 18K Yellow Gold Dress Watch with Caliber 89 (c. 1949)
For sale is a lovely vintage IWC from the early 1950s, featuring the iconic Caliber 89 manual-wind movement in a solid 18K yellow gold case.

Case: 18K yellow gold, 36.4mm diameter (without crown), elegant rounded lugs, thin bezel
Movement: IWC Caliber 89 – manual winding, 17 jewels, central seconds, approximately 36-hour power reserve. This robust and highly regarded movement is known for its reliability and was used in both civilian and military IWC watches.
Dial: Original silver/cream tone with applied gold baton hour markers, gold dauphine hands, and classic “International Watch Co. Schaffhausen” signature. Clean, minimalist 1950s design.
Serial Number: 1,194,329 (dates the watch to approximately 1949)
Crystal: Acrylic (typical for the period) most likely not original
Strap: Black alligator-pattern leather strap (replacement; fits the elegant dress-watch style)
This Ref. 170 is a classic example of IWC’s refined dress watches from the golden era of Swiss horology. The 36.4mm size wears comfortably and looks proportionate on most wrists — neither too small by today’s standards nor oversized. The Cal. 89 is a collector favourite for its simplicity, accuracy, and proven durability.
