Hey folks,
Up today for the discerning Speedy collector, I have a rare treat, a 1969 pre moon landing DON Speedmaster powered by the venerable 861 caliber
I had purchased this watch locally and am the second owner.
The original owner wore it daily since purchasing it in the early 70’s and with no family to hand it down to, he ended up parting ways with it.
I’ve loved and worn this watch ever since receiving it and have had it fully serviced with our very own Ashton Tracy in December 2021.
I have not been inclined to open the caseback since service to obtain the serial number, however it was in the service invoice and I’ve attached a screenshot of the same. Serial number starts with 29113xxx
The service invoice is available and included with the sale, as is all the replaced parts, of which there were a few including the Chronograph hand. All parts used are OEM Omega parts with the packaging included. I had requested Ashton to age the chrono hand so that it wouldn’t look too out of place against the original hour and minute hands and he has done a pretty good job of doing so.
The watch and case retains its original lustre and has not been polished, save for the bracelet which seems to have some attempts at refinishing. This is how I’ve worn it and enjoyed it.
The dial is a beautiful stepped dial which showcases the beginning of a nice brown patina at the edges of the step and will continue to develop with time. There is no chipping of the lume on the hands or markers and this is, in my opinion, the best bargain to finding an original piece with no drawbacks to speak of.
There is some stretch to the bracelet as can be expected and my favourite aspect of this particular flat link aside from being a rarity, is the elasticity of the links near the clasp. The bracelet is large enough to accommodate a wrist size of approx 7.25”
The endlinks are the original 516 stamped end links for this 1039 stamped bracelet, as confirmed by the stamp on the clasp.
After service the watch is running at +1s and is quite the daily wearer being a more compact 42mm and is incredibly light as compared to the modern speedies.
The bezel has some wear in keeping with the age, but is completely legible and the Dot over ninety is fully intact and apparent.
Per my research, these models are selling over $10k with the bracelet itself being sold over $2k, which makes my ask of $6999 rather reasonable.
If there are any further questions, do inquire and I’ll do my best to get the answers for you.
