A modern cult classic is reborn in this gold-on-green Alpinist.
The Seiko Prospex "Alpinist" SPB121 has a design you're probably already familiar with. The green dial with gold accents seen here is directly influenced by the cult classic SARB017, which was the most popular design from the previous Alpinist generation, released in 2006. The SARB017 was the watch that spawned the Alpinist’s modern resurgence due to its distinct, maximalist flair.
While standard field watches have generally favored a more restrained design focused on the essentials, the SARB017 had a look that was full of life, with a sunburst green dial that contrasted with its gilt accents in a wonderfully charismatic way. The new SPB121 channels that spirit with some slight tweaks to the formula. Rather than recycling the sunburst dial finish, Seiko has instead given the SPB121's dial a darker, more matte look with a rich verdant tone. It feels authentic to the watch's outdoor spirit and serves as a great backdrop for the play of light created by the use of the golden accents.
Seiko has paired the SPB121 with a stamped brown leather strap, complementing the intermix of green and gold, but one of the charms of the SARB017 was mixing and matching it with various NATOs and other strap options. Expect that versatility to continue with the new SPB121.
