Background
A rare Regatta Timer manufactured by Certina for the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics and featuring a Valjoux 728 chronograph with a central chronograph minute.
- The watch is powered by a manual wind column wheel movement Valjoux 728, which is notable for being the first regatta movement with the minute chronograph counter positioned in the center. The internet claims that it is one of the rarest Valjoux movements, produced in a limited series for only one year, in 1971.
- See timegrapher photos in next post - works well when worn in rotation and, if desired, a service would make it perfect.
- Reference 8701.504 which the internet alleges they are rare and unique - see this wonderful article from Heuer Chrono (The Vintage Yaching Watches Reference) for more
- There's one other for sale, world-wide for almost double the price (and it has a plain old ESA dial).
- Chronograph features:
- Center Chronominute and seconds, regatta indicator, designed specifically for sailing competitions (for all the sailing racing we do).
- Vibrant multi-color dial with unique graphic elements, featuring a tachymeter scale and regatta indicator. The layered design includes shades of navy, red, cream, and blue, with contrasting orange and turquoise accents on the hands.
- Hour counter at 6 o'clock, tachymeter scale on chapter ring.
- New acrylic drive crystal fitted before listing.
- Signed Certina crown.
- Bracelet is period German-made by "Friedrich Stahl Schmuck- und Metallwaren" with neat hollow middle links, 22mm end links., and an micro-adjusable clasp (easily fits my 7.75" wrist)
- Stainless steel and marked "DBGM" (Deutsches Bundes Gebrauchsmuster, which can be translated as "German Federal Registered Design"). German made.
- The watch came to me from a bulk auction lot (as written up elsewhere) and now it is time to move it on and so I can have other horological adventures.
