THE BACKSTORY
The year 1969 was nothing short of momentous for the watch industry. The mechanical watch faced its most consequential threat in the form of Japanese quartz, and three new automatic chronograph movements appeared on the scene.
Of these, only one – Zenith’s El Primero – featured a fast and precise 5 Hz escapement and a fully integrated movement design. With the A384, Zenith presented its new column-wheel chronograph movement in a compact, angular tonneau case shape with prominent beveled edges and subtly brushed surfaces. The case design foretold not just Zenith’s own popular Defy line of watches, but the prevailing sports watch designs of the decade to come.
Comparing this latest 50th Anniversary El Primero A384 Revival with the original of 1969, one is immediately struck by how faithful Zenith has been to the 1969 design. The movement, of course, is the same Zenith El Primero that enthusiasts know and love. But it doesn’t end there. From the 37mm angular tonneau case to the panda dial with applied luminous hour markers and the date window placed at 4:30, all of the details are right. This is in many ways the same watch. The key difference that one is likely to notice – and enjoy – is the use of sapphire crystals on the front and back, the latter allowing the A384 wearer to enjoy a view of the El Primero cal. 400.
